FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) Faculty is calculated by adding the percentage of all full-time and part-time
work loads for all assignments and dividing by 100. Since work load is measured on a percent scale, with 100% equal to full-time,
this calculation translates part-time
faculty into a full-time equivalent. FTE
provides a standard measurement of the
number of faculty needed to manage all work
load assignments in a given year.
Faculty assignments are
comprised of: direct instruction, indirect
instruction, administrative,
research/creative, public service, and
other.
- Direct instruction
encompasses credit hour generating
activities performed by faculty members.
Team taught, multiple sequence, and
cross-listed courses are counted once.
Independent study, foreign study, thesis
research, internships, student teaching,
and Institute for Professional
Development courses are excluded.
- Indirect
Instruction assignments do not
generate credit hours and include:
curriculum development, program
advisement, and doctoral dissertation
advisement.
- Administrative
assignments are those duties which are
assumed by faculty members bearing the
titles: department chair, program
director, and associate dean.
- Research/Creative
assignments are related to research or
scholarly activities in a relevant field
including formal research assignments
and artistic endeavors.
- Public Service
assignments are those which reflect the
public service goals of the university.
- Other includes
any faculty activity outside the scope
of the previous categories. These
activities are classified as either
unassigned time or paid/unpaid leave.
Percent FTE is the
percentage of full-time equivalent faculty
in each assignment.
Course Equivalent
is used to quantify the amount of time spent
in each work load assignment vis-à-vis
teaching a course. One course equivalent
equals the amount of time a faculty member
spends teaching one course during the
academic year. Course equivalents are
calculated by adding the faculty work load
percentages within each assignment and then
dividing by the percentage of time needed to
teach one course. Some faculty exceed 100%
work load, thus, the sum of assignment
course equivalents may also exceed the full
work load listed in the following table.
